Mills Godwin 4 1 5 Deep Run 1 0 1 MG: Jacobson 2, Dracos, Kinnick, Aggen DR: Smith Saves: Hagerman (MG) 1, Hauser (DR) 6
Eighty minutes and Deep Run separated Mills Godwin from inching closer to an undefeated season. With one week left in the regular season, it was battle of two of the top teams in the region Friday at Axselle Stadium as the Eagles beat the Wildcats 5-1.
“It was a great match for us,” said Godwin coach Skip Stevens. “We had a 1-0 game the last time, so we felt like if we finished a little better, we’ll have a good opportunity to win.
“I couldn’t be more proud of my guys. They play hard, they played as a team and our shots went our way tonight.”
Scoring came fast and in abundance the first 40 minutes. The Eagles got on the board first when Sam Dracos scored in the 13th minute. Within the next minute, Christian Jones got the ball past Wildcats goalkeeper Garret Hauser to put Godwin up 2-0.
Jamie Kinnick’s header between two Deep Run defenders off a corner increased their lead to 3-0 with 20 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Wildcats prevented the first-half shutout when Cutter Jacobson scored in the 21st minute, but just before the half ended, Pierce Aggen of Godwin scored and the Eagles went into intermission with a three-goal advantage.
The second half didn’t have as much pop, with the Eagles scoring the lone goal in the 50th minute when Jacobson found the back of the net for his second goal of the match.
Hauser finished with seven saves for the Wildcats (10-3-1, 9-2-1 Colonial District).
“They guys are going to have to come together to bounce back from this loss. They have to decide are we done,” said Deep Run coach Frank Ford. “They’re the ones stepping on the pitch.
“We’re a very good team, but we just didn’t play well.”
Godwin (13-0, 12-0) can clinch the district championship for the second consecutive season with two matches remaining. The Eagles are poised to go undefeated in district play for the second consecutive year.
“That would be great. I would love to go undefeated again to reward the hard work that our teams had and our senior class has had,” Stevens said.
