6/3/13
23 Mills Godwin (Henrico, Va.) 18-1-0 1
Season complete. Virginia Group AAA region semifinalist.
School Facts: Public, 2,000 students in grades 9-12.
Notes: For the second straight year, Mills Godwin carried an undefeated record into the regional semifinals, and for the second straight time suffered a defeat — ending a bid to reach the state tournament. Cutter Jacobson had the team’s regulation goal in what became a 2-1 overtime loss to Midlothian. Over the past two seasons, Mills Godwin has gone 36-2-1 — both losses in the region semifinals.
Fun Fact: The school is named in honor of Mills E. Godwin Jr., a two-time governor of Virginia. Godwin was a Democrat when he won office in 1966 and switched to the Republican party in another successful bid for governor in 1974. He was the first governor in U.S. history to be elected as both a Democrat and Republican.
TOP STORY: For the second year in a row, Mills Godwin went undefeated in the regular season, yet lost in the regional playoffs. This year, the defeat costs the program the nation’s No. 1 billing, which gets turned over to Omaha South (Neb.).
BIG MOVER: Cosby (Midlothian, Va.). Cosby, a preseason Top 25 team, is back in the mix — jumping from No. 37 to No. 16 this week, following a region tournament title. Cosby beat league rival Midlothian for the title, a day after Midlothian knocked off then No. 1 Mills Godwin.

23 Mills Godwin (Henrico, Va.) 18-1-0 23
