Central Region quarterfinals: Cosby (12-3-1) at Thomas Dale (14-2-1), 6 p.m.; Henrico (11-3-2) at Mills Godwin (17-0), 7 p.m.; Colonial Heights (11-4-1) at Midlothian (11-3-1), 7 p.m.; Deep Run (12-5-1) at Atlee (11-4-1), 7:30 p.m.
Semifinals: Thursday at Cosby at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
Finals: Friday at Cosby at 7:30 p.m.
What to watch for: Seven of the eight teams participating in this year’s Central Region tournament have all spent time in the T-D Top 10 throughout the entire season, with Atlee climbing in at No. 8 the final week. Henrico knocked off the Capital’s No. 2 seed, Lee-Davis, in the district tournament before beating Hanover. The Hawks beat Atlee in the district tournament to capture the district’s second spot. The question is how will the two Capital District teams fare? The district went 2-17 in non-district play in the regular season, with three of Atlee’s four losses coming outside of the Capital. The most intriguing match of the quarterfinals is Cosby traveling to play Thomas Dale. It’s a rematch of 2012’s Central Region final when the Titans prevailed 1-0. The winner of a potential Mills Godwin-Midlothian semifinal matchup could produce the region champion.
Team to beat: Mills Godwin. The Eagles are unbeaten and have only been challenged once this season, a 1-0 victory over Deep Run on April 26. But we’ve seen this from the Eagles before. Last season, Godwin also entered region play without a loss only to be beaten by Thomas Dale 2-1 in the semifinals.
Teams to watch: Defending champion Cosby and Dominion District winner Midlothian are teams that can break through for the title. Midlothian edged Cosby 2-1 in overtime in the district tournament final.
