Patrick Henry Drops One to Tough Mills Godwin Team
The weather was beautiful at the start of Tuesday’s varsity soccer match between Patrick Henry High School and the undefeated Mills E. Godwin, Eagles but even without a drop falling from the sky, a storm engulfed the home team Patriots early on.
In the fourth minute of the match, it started sprinkling when forward Jamie Kinnick bested PH goalie Sam Wellman and found the back of the net for the first goal of the night. The eagles continued to pelt Wellman with shots on goal and in the 18th minute of the first half, Godwin’s Pierce Aggen (midfielder) passed to forward Cutter Jacobson in front of the net and slammed the goal home for Godwin’s second score of the night.
The first half ended with the Eagles on top 2-nil.
Aggen wasn’t finished by any means and opened up the cloudburst when in the 19th minute of the second half, he scored his first goal of the night and then nabbed his second off a header on an in-bounds pass from midfielder Christian Jones with eight minutes left in the second half; making the score 4-nil, Eagles.
The final goal of the match was scored by midfielder Hampton Hall when his kick squeaked past Jacobson to settle in the back corner of the net.
Although bright moments were few, they did exist. Keeper Jacobson made quite a few spectacular saves (or the final score would have been much more lopsided), and PH head coach Daniel McGraw saw a silver lining in the clouds as well.
“We played a team that likely will be fighting for at least the Final Four of the State Championships like they did last year,” he said. “When you get to play against a top level team like [Godwin], you know this is the way we want to play.”
The Eagles are now 6-0 (5-0 Colonial) and the loss moved Patrick Henry to 4-2-1 (2-2-1).
